Tuesday Night Music Club & My Back Catalogue
It’s been a busy couple of months here of recording, writing and laying the groundwork for some big adventures.
I brought back my Crap Music Rave Party DJ show, which was awesomely nuts. If you’re only familiar with me from my work as Woody, you might not have heard about it - it’s a DJ show where you can request any song, as long as it sucks. I’ve then gotta hyperactively sell it to the audience and get the dancefloor going with it. It’s bloody good fun and I was lucky to have a packed-out Sixty Cats in Perth to get silly with.
That got me thinking about my back catalogue - I’ve been a songwriter for coming up on 25 years. There’s a lot of great work there that I’m really proud of. So I’ve started exploring it. On tuesday nights, from 5-7pm AWST (thats’s Perth-time, otherwise it’s 7-9pm AEST, 9-11 NZT or 10am-12 GMT in the UK), I go live on my Instagram and Tiktok accounts for two hours. I call it my “Tuesday Night Music Club.” In these streams, you’ll find me alternating between my originals from through my career and my attention-grabbing cover songs. It’s been great - it’s helped me fall back in love with the 123 songs I have slaved over throughout the years. It’s a wildy varying body of work that I’ve managed to put together.
There’s the electro punk-rock of my early Tomás Ford stuff, the epic narrative crooning of my spy thriller Chase, the sheer bizarre confusion of my pandemic songwriting, songs about my adventures in Malaysia and the rawer, more personal stuff I was writing just before Woody’s batch of material started to come together.
Oh, I almost forgot - in the process of doing these streams, I discovered I’d written most of a musical eleven years ago. Last week’s stream focused on that - turns out it has legs. I thought I’d only written two songs for it, but I just kept finding more until I had nine that I thought were worth a go. Finding that was excellently odd, like tripping over a time capsule from a younger version of myself. It was a pretty intense experience to play them in the stream while trying to figure out the story that linked them all, but it was damn good fun.
As you can imagine, it’s been exciting (and a little emotional, I guess) to rediscover and reconnect with my history. There’s so much great stuff, and most of it was only ever performed live ‘cos my touring was so all-consuming before the pandemic. I’m working on how to approach getting this music out into the world. Probably not all at once. Stay tuned on that.
